Mr Starr from Dorchester Dorset has had a wheelchair developed so that he can join his children on the beach and basically go anywhere, but the DVLA have stepped in and told Mr Starr to keep the wheelchair off the pavements and to use it in public he will need to obtain a category H driving licence.
The chair weighs in at 220kg and is 22cm to wide and 100kg too heavy to be classed as a wheelchair, the chair cost £15000 and is powered by a 24 volt motor and can reach speeds of 8mph, Mr Starr controls the chair with a joystick and the seat is in fact a racing style bucket car seats.
At the moment Mr Starr uses it on private land, but the issue is that he needs to cross a pavement and road to get there and without the H licence he is cannot do this.
