Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The new Sharan made an appearance at the Geneva show and is larger than the old one in all dimensions but most striking is that it is nine inches longer, but manages to come in at 30kg lighter. All models have the seven seats with access to the second and third row being through a sliding door, in the higher specs this goes to an electronically operated one.

For storage and capacity all five rear seats can fold flat, with the middle three sliding back and forward and VW state that seven adults can be accommodated.

The engine range starts at 1.4 TSI, but the fact that it is a combination of a supercharger and turbocharger gives in an impressive 148bhp which makes it good for the job, the rest of the range come in at the 2 litre in 138bhp and 168bhp turbo diesel and a 198bhp turbo petrol which has been twined with the twin-clutch semi-automatic DSG gearbox.

Apart from the 198bhp petrol all the engines come with a stop/start system and regenerative braking. The most economical version is the 138bhp coming in at 52.3 mpg and 143g/km CO2.

Finally the option of  adaptive chassis control system allows the driver three choices of normal, comfort and sport for the dampers and the park assist system allows it to steer itself into parking spaces at right-angles to the direction of traffic. In its original format the Sharan was more or less the same as the Ford Galaxy or SEAT Alhambra and though the Ford connection is no longer this is most definitely a replacement for the Alhambra.

It is able to operate independently of the combustion engine thus making this model a full hybrid. On the electric power alone the vehicle is able to reach 30mph or the electric motor can supplement the V6 engine to provide a useful boost during overtaking and can produce from 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 149mph.

The new Escape derivative comes the V6 TDi engine features 4XMOTION as standard, which comprises reduction gearing , centre and rear differentials that can each be fully locked for off road application and five stage control for the four wheel drive system. The first stage is for on road usage the second is for off road use and activates automatic control for the mechanical differential locks stage three engages the low range gear box with revised mapping of the gear box to raise the shift points and switches off the automatic upshift in manual mode. Stage four applies the centre differential lock and stage five adds the rear differential lock.

The changes with the new Touareg go far beyond a simple re-styling and the new model will include an automatic eight speed transmission and on most models there will be the start/stop technology touchscreen satellite navigation and leather upholstery.  Added to this there will be options such as full beam sensors so the lights dip when they sense on coming traffic , side scan to warn of traffic, roll compensation, air suspension and air conditioned and massaging seats.

The Juke styled mainly in London and is going to be built in Sunderland alongside the Micra Note and Qashqai, under its quirky dramatic look it does in fact share the same platform as the Micra and Note and the 1.5 litre engine is shared with both of them.

The petrol 1.6 litre is a further development on an existing unit, the Juke will also be available with the new direct-injection turbo petrol and the ultimate version will also use this engine with CVT gearbox and four wheel drive, the rest of the fleet are front wheel drive and the majority have manual gear boxes.

The Juke does provide underfloor storage but even with this the luggage capacity is the same as the Micra but less than the note and the underfloor storage is sacrificed in the four wheel drive, the full details and prices will surely be available soon prior to the October launch
