Mercedes, Porsche and BMW have all confirmed that they have been adapting their models making them more suitable for the wider girth, with BMW using 800 volunteers to discover how obesity affects mobility whist driving, they are to examine everything from the size of the doors to the position of the seats to how pedals are placed.
The fact is that the average family car is now nearly double the weight of its equivalent in 1950 and just under a foot wider.
On radio two today the phone in was centred around this, but the main grumble of people was trying to park these larger sized cars in parking spaces not built for them.
