Under current legislation unisured cars must be found on the road for any action to be taken, however from June every car must have either valid insurance or SORN Statutory Off Road Notice.
Should a care be found without insurance or a SORN they will in the first instance be warned and given a timescale to rectify should it not be resolved a £100 fine will be issued and the next step on from that is towing away, regardless of where the car is kept.
Around four percent of drivers are uninsured and that could mean as many as four million on the road and that add up to £30 to everyone elses policy.
There have been warning that all on the face of it, this will be a good tool in fighting those who drive without insurance it may catch some innocent people who maybe simply unaware the AA have commented ” There must be some flexibility or leniency, otherwise this will become just another scam, like some cowboy parking ticket or clamping operation.”
