Traffic lights set to amber

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Portsmouth is to be the first UK City to try out this scheme which is already wide-spread in France and Spain, the idea is that during the night from around 11pm until 4am all traffic lights will be set to flashing amber.

The idea is to avoid unnecessary waiting at red lights, thus allowing free flow of traffic there are also personal safety issues related to avoiding being stationery at night in some areas.

Obviously drivers would be required to approach the lights with caution and there would of course need to be new signage and education for the new system if agreed by Department of Transport.
